Background
The
Ashton area is just 1 kilometre from Ashton-under-Lyne town centre and
consists of mainly terraced houses with rear yards, arranged in a
grid-iron pattern. The properties were once council owned but
transferred to Ashton Pioneer Homes ownership and refurbished in 1999.
Shops, other community facilities exist in the area and there are
commercial and industrial activities located to the North West and South
East of the residential area.
Scheme
Objectives
 | To
reduce traffic speeds and traffic flow and make consequential
environmental improvements.
|
Impacts
Residents
are pleased and positive about the impact the Home Zone Project has had on
their lives. They
feel the changes made have created a safe and attractive environment,
which had resulted in them feeling much more settled and happy with their
homes. Residents
consider that the improvements have resulted in the children of the area
mixing and playing much more and the parents feel more confident about
this in terms of traffic and safety. Improved maintenance of premises and
planting has been noted. Crime
statistics suggest that domestic burgulary has reduced by 80% in last
three years and vehicle crime down by 50%.
