Home Zones Challenge
The
Home Zones concept has been trialled in the
United Kingdom, with eight pilot projects under way in England, one in Wales,
four in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland. The Prime Minister announced
on 24 April 2001 the intention to accelerate the growth in the programme of Home
Zones in England by establishing a £30m Challenge fund.
The Challenge experience is expected to yield a
substantial increase in information about how best to actively involve local
communities interests in developing Home Zones that suit their needs and aspirations.
It will identify the design processes that can lead to successful new ways of
using residential streets. It will also help to identify and expand the
range of solutions and constructional techniques available.
In January 2002, Transport Minister Sally Keeble
announced the winners of the £30 million Home Zones Challenge.
From the 237 bids received 61 schemes were selected
with the individual
awards vary from £90,000 to £1.5 million. The schemes are at varying stages
of development with some still at the planning stage, whereas others are already
being constructed, being extensions of the Pilot schemes.
