Background

The South West Burnley area is one of the most deprived areas in Burnley.  The Home Zone is centred on 80 densely constructed terraced houses which were built in the 1900’s.  The main road running through the area is used as a rat run to avoid the main trunk roads, hence the accident rate for the area is very high.  There is a small area of open space which at present is used for fly tipping and dog walking.

Scheme Objectives

To reduce traffic speeds
To form echelon parking layout and calm traffic
To enhance the local environment through high quality street furniture and materials
To reroute health centre traffic
To create open spaces linked to the street
To improve lighting (including back streets)

Impacts

Residents are generally happy with the new street scene arrangements.

Progress - March 2005

Streets are now substantially complete, all paving and street furniture in place.  Selective house clearance finished with parking areas/ open spaces being treated.  New access road to community centre and closure of through route still to be completed but these will be funded from already identified highway funds.  Further treatment of open space/landscaped areas to be carried out with funding from previously identified alternative sources.
