Suffolk County Council

Cambridge Road and Oxford Road comprise terraced houses built in 1890/1910 in Victorian style grid patterns.  There are no open spaces or play-space either in the streets or nearby.  The streets are very busy to the North where the shops and bus services are located.  Half of the residents are in the vulnerable age groups of under 15 and over 60 years.

Scheme Objectives

To provide streets designed for residents, pedestrians and cyclists
To open up the streets for social use

Impacts

Wheelchair and electric chair users find the shared surface areas easy to use and the junctions much easier to negotiate than dropped kerbs.  The reduction in volume of traffic has mitigated noise and residents comment that they can leave their front windows open at night.  It has been commented that residents are walking visitors through the roads to look at the artwork.  Children have more confidence to use the shared space as a play area.  The artwork is being used as a teaching resource.
