Background
The
Castle Grove Area is situated close to Portchester Town Centre. The area comprises housing from the early to mid 1900’s,
with schools situated to the west and east of the zone and a shopping
centre to the north. Parking
is restricted and there have been access problems for emergency vehicles.
Scheme Objectives
 | Improve
quality of life
|
 | Increase
safety for all
|
 | Provide
adequate parking for residents
|
 | Reduce
vehicle speed.
|
Impacts
Traffic
has been discouraged from using the area which has lead to an increased
use of road space by pedestrians, particularly school children when
walking home. There has been a reduction in vehicle speed and easier
parking for the majority of residents has been provided.
By
planting trees and shrubs the residents have had an increased interest to
maintain the landscape in their streets. Many
residents have taken the opportunity to provide off road parking and also
improve the frontage of their properties.

Progress
- March 2005
The
main civil engineering works including the timber planters were completed
in November with the final coloured surfacing completed in January.
Planters and parking in the street now form the traffic calming
element with the pink surfacing defining the movement areas. All signing
and traffic regulation orders are in place and traffic is generally moving
slower within the street. The
main activity this quarter has been planting the landscaping, this has
also involved residents planting parties to assist the contractor in some
of the tasks. These works were completed in January and greatly enhance
the visual amenity of the streets as well as assisting in traffic calming.
Residents newsletters have continued although it is proving more
difficult in keeping the residents engaged now the main works are
complete. It is hoped that the residents will be helping organise an
opening.
