Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames

Background

The housing in this area is mainly terraced built in the inter war years, most of which are owner occupied.  The properties have front gardens and nearly 50% of these have been converted into parking areas.  A railway station is located nearby along with a community and leisure centre and a shopping centre.

Scheme Objectives

To reclaim residential and shopping streets for the people
Put pedestrians at top of hierarchy
Reduce vehicle speed
Safer walking and cycling
Improve residential amenity and quality of life

Impacts

An improved community spirit has been felt through an increased feeling of confidence and ownership of the street.  The scheme has brought people together by making the residents take a pride in their surroundings.  The environment and residential amenity has greatly improved and this may be a contributing factor to the drop in recorded crime.
