Background
The
housing in this area is mainly terraced built in the inter war years, most
of which are owner occupied. The
properties have front gardens and nearly 50% of these have been converted
into parking areas. A
railway station is located nearby along with a community and leisure
centre and a shopping centre.
Scheme Objectives
 | To reclaim residential and shopping streets for
the people
|
 | Put pedestrians at top of hierarchy
|
 | Reduce vehicle speed
|
 | Safer walking and cycling
|
 | Improve residential amenity and quality of life
|
Impacts
An
improved community spirit has been felt through an increased feeling of
confidence and ownership of the street. The
scheme has brought people together by making the residents take a pride in
their surroundings. The
environment and residential amenity has greatly improved and this may be a
contributing factor to the drop in recorded crime.
