Background
Cleadon Park Estate is situated
to the south of South Shields. The
residential area of Cleadon Park was built in the inter war period. Two thirds of houses on the estate are council owned.
There is a high number of children living on the estate and most
residents have lived there for 10years or more. The
residents have a very strong sense of loyalty and community spirit with
over 70% of residents saying that they would rather live on the estate
than have to move away.
Scheme Objectives
 | To
encourage non-resident traffic to use alternative routes.
|
 | Reduce
traffic speeds
|
 | Improve
pedestrian and cycle accessibility |
 | To
give the streets back to the residents. |
 | To
extend the school grounds to improve the access to the school. |
 | To
implement play areas |
Impacts
The Home Zone has created a
more attractive type of street environment, which has set the standard for
future projects. There is a greater sense of community which has been aided by
the reduction in anti-social behaviour through improved street lighting.
The shared surface and improved environment allows parents feel
more confident to allow their children to play in the street.
The reduced traffic speed allows more walking and cycling in
safety. The Home Zone is part
of a wider regeneration strategy for the estate, which will involve 800
new properties being built with Home Zone streets.
