College
Community area lies to the south west of Trowbridge town centre. It
comprises of private and social housing, a mix of terraced and
semi-detached, most built in the 1950/60’s. There
is an open area and child’s play area at the centre of the proposed Home
Zone. The Trowbridge College
and Arc theatre are also within the area. With
the area being close to the college, it does have a problem with parking
and the risk of accidents at peak times.
Scheme Objectives
 | Re-allocation of
road space to provide shared use areas for social activity, play,
walking and cycling.
|
 | To reduce traffic
speed and volume.
|
 | To enhance the
opportunity for children’s play and social activities.
|
 | To enhance integration between the college
and adjacent residential area.
|
Impacts
There
has been an improved sense of community. New
trees, planters and grassed areas have softened the overall look of the
estate and greater care and pride in the local area.
The anticipated integration between the nearby technical college
and local residents has not been successful. This
is in part to longstanding issues relating to concerns over parking,
speeding on adjacent streets and petty vandalism.
There are signs that children are using the local streets for
greater social activity and this is due in part to the reduction in
traffic speeds.

Progress
- March 2005
The Home Zone was fully completed on the 31st
December 2004. Meeting was held in Dec 05 to engage partners re.
construction of the play area off of Laburnum Grove. We now appear to have
the funds in place to be able to proceed. An exhibition of options for the
play area was held in Jan 05 and was generally well received. Construction
of Play Area looks likely in May 2005
