Home Zones Challenge Final Conference

A conference is currently being arranged for November 2005 to mark the end of the Challenge and to disseminate the lessons learnt over the last three years.

Summit 2005: delivering sustainable communitiesTwo thousand delegates from the UK, Europe and the wider world are expected to take part in the Delivering Sustainable Communities Summit, between 31 January - 2 February 2005 at the GMEX, Manchester. Senior Government Ministers and leading national and international experts will attend and speak at this unique event.

The second conference, the Big Home Zone Event, was held on the 12th and 13th November 2003 at Leicester Race Course.  The theme of the conference was "Design" and was supported by an exhibition of suppliers.

The day began with a key note speech by Tony McNulty MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport who also launched the new video "Home Zones: The UK Experience".  Following the launch a series of panel discussions were held with audience participation.  Subjects discussed included "Involving the Community in the Design Process", "Design for Safety and Security", "Design for Access and Parking" and "Design for Maintenance - Retrofits and New Developments". Other speakers included Michael Jeeves, Team Leader, Transport Development Section, Leicester City Council, who described the history and safety achievements of Worthington Street one of the forerunners of the Home Zone concept and Francis Ashton, Team Leader, Accident Investigation Unit, Nottingham City Council, who outlined the story of the latest Challenge Home Zone to be opened in Kennington Road, Nottingham.  The conference was supported by an exhibition by suppliers of a wide range of products including: street furniture, lighting, road surfacing, play equipment and landscaping materials appropriate to Home Zones.

The first Home Zones Challenge Conference was held on Thursday 13th March at the Guild Hall in York. The theme of the conference was 'Engaging with the Community'. 

A lively keynote presentation was given by Wayne Hemingway, the international designer. He particularly focused on the George Wimpey development at Staiths, Gateshead with which he is involved. Adrian Trim, Road Safety Team Leader for the Morice Town Home Zone in Plymouth, highlighted the difficulties of implementing a Home Zone, and the need for dedication, resolve and resources to breakdown the barriers encountered. Judith Devismes, a local resident and active community representative, spoke alongside Adrian. The last presentation of the day was given by Ray Gercans and Wayne Duerden of the Department for Transport.

After lunch, delegates were able to attend a choice of Workshop case study sessions. The topics covered included: meeting the needs of people with disabilities, financing Home Zones, involving the surrounding area, and enthusing the community to overcome apathy.
