Background
Dundonald
Street and Methuen Street are in the Bidston Ward. The terraced
housing dates back to the late 19th century, with no garages or other off
street parking. There is a primary school at the end of Dundonald
Street. Due to socio-economic deprivation in the area, house prices
are extremely low with little prospect of improving without investment in
the area. There is no Residents’ Association for the streets and
this is thought to reflect the low esteem of the residents and lack of
belief that their involvement will make any significant improvement.
Scheme Objectives
 | To re-establish
pedestrians dominance and reclaim the streets for those living in the
area
|
 | To improve the environment.
|
Impacts
Residents
of other nearby streets have remarked upon the improved appearance and are
now asking for similar treatment for their street. Milner
Street, on the opposite of Laird Street to Dundonald Street, has been
included in a Housing Market Renewal Initiative. Residents
are generally opposed to demolition of the street and would like to be
included in a Home Zone scheme. Value
of property in both streets has increased considerably.
