Background
Egerton Street, which lies on
the edge of the city centre, has been left behind in terms of Chester’s
redevelopment. The area is
dominated by a mix of traditional terraced housing and more recent
high-density local authority flats and maisonettes, interspersed with
small areas of open space. The
later housing is softened by planting while the Victorian streets have
cobbles and stone setts. The open spaces have no recreational value and no
play equipment.

Impacts
Significant
changes in traffic speed and flow are being observed and rat-running has
been stopped. This has made
the area quieter and visually the new street furniture and street lighting
complement the area. Residents
are very satisfied with the changes.
The toddlers play area has been very well received and respected so
far. The use of white
lighting in the street lighting is reported to make the area feel safer.
Plans are being developed to expand local CCTV systems to include the home
zone. Chester and District
Housing Trust have embarked on a programme of window replacement to
improve the appearance of their properties.
