Background
The Gresham area of
Middlesbrough is characterised by a number of cross-streets with two main
transverse routes. There is
an infant and junior school, communal gardens and a small child play area
in the vicinity. The main
thoroughfare is four lanes wide with the two outside lanes marked for
parking. Many of the principal local generators are also located on
this street, so pedestrian activity is highest here.
Scheme Objectives
 | Enhance
the community fabric and safety by introducing the home zone concept
across five neighbourhood streets. |
 | To
provide for the safe movement of vulnerable users |
 | To
improve security |
 | To
provide on-street parking along the cross-streets as an overspill from
the main thoroughfare |
 | To
discourage traffic from entering the zone. |
Impacts
The residents have commented on
the area feeling safer. The
environment has benefitted from improved night-time security from new
street lighting. There is a more pleasant ambience and a better quality of
life encouraging more walking. Early
indications are that the prices of properties within zone have increased
at a faster rate to those outside adjacent area. Together, these
improvements have encouraged requests from nearby streets to extend the
scheme.
