Background
Kennington,
located west of Nottingham is a residential suburb, comprising a mixture
of terraced housing built in 1928, and two storey flats built in the
1980’s. The area is mostly
council owned. The population
is mixed, with established older residents living alongside a newer
population with a high proportion of single parents and young children.
Scheme Objectives
 | To
reduce traffic speeds to under 10mph
|
 | Encourage
play activities by opening up the communal areas
|
 | Move
the parking from outside the schools.
|
Impacts
There is a
greater sense of community cohesion. Residents are taking an active
role against vandalism an increase in community activities. Traffic
speeds have been greatly reduced and as a result there is better parking
behaviour, particularly outside the school. This has lead to greater
confidence in the area by the Housing Department with higher investment in
the housing stock.
