Background
Littlemoor is situated in the
town of Rawdon, North West of Leeds City Centre. The
housing is predominantly Victorian terraced with small gardens and mainly
on street parking. There is a
primary and secondary school immediately adjacent to the area. There is strong community involvement in the Littlemoor area
and the residents group have already successfully campaigned for
improvement in the area to deter rat running.
Scheme Objectives
 | Reduce
rat-running |
 | Improve
appearance
|
 | Improve
street lighting
|
 | Improve
efficiency of parking
|
 | More
greenery on street
|
 | Improve
links between houses and adjacent green space. |
Impacts
All
of the objectives have been broadly met with a greater sense of community
being generated. The
residents’ insistence on maintaining parking levels in the streets meant
that there was no space for additional planting. However, residents have planted bulbs in the grass at the edge
of the green space. The
condition of the street is substantially improved with street lighting
giving a better sense of safety.

Progress
- March 2005
Work progressed well through November and into
December with the general contractor, Colas.
We have experienced difficulties in getting the Electricity
Company's contractor on site to make the connections to the new lighting
columns and road signs. This
led to a delay in getting the surfacing contractor on site on the
previously agreed dates. A
push by everyone allowed the majority of the surfacing to be completed
just before Christmas. The new black light heads for the street lighting arrived
shortly before Christmas and were fitted immediately. One particularly dark patch, adjacent to the access to a row
of 9 terraced houses, resulted in an extra column being provided. After
the holiday break, the Imprint surfacing was applied and the steps onto
the park adjacent to Park Road were finished.
The general reaction from residents has been good. The only
negativity has been in regard to the works not happening on promised
dates, although, without exception, everyone has understood the reasons
why. Colas were signed up to
the 'Considerate Contractor' scheme and the ethos of that scheme showed
clearly in the workmen’s' attitude to the community on site. There
are only a few small tasks to finish off - top soiling needs sorting out,
although the wet weather has prevented this to date.
