Background
The
Moorside Estate, situated on the outskirts of Dewsbury is a mixture of
terraced and semi-detached housing. Moorside has suffered from a poor reputation over the past 10
years due to high domestic burglary rates, nuisance and anti-social
behaviour. In the past two
years the residents have forged a multi-agency partnership "The
Moorside and Schools Partnership" whose aim is to promote the
physical and social regeneration of the area.
Scheme Objectives
 | Improve
health
|
 | Improve
safety
|
 | Create
play area for children
|
 | Engage
the community
|
 | Reduce
car speeds |
Impacts
Residents are taking a more
active role in their community, forming a group to ensure that the area is
kept clean. Children are making full use of the equipment placed for their
use and parents feel their children can play safely. All parts of the
community have valuable input to the scheme and are helping to look after
the area. A more pleasant
environment, slow traffic speed and a safe area to play all contribute to
reduction in stress and thus improvement in health. Damage
to properties, through anti-social behaviour, has reduced to almost zero.
At the start of the works there were about 20% unoccupied
properties and on completion there is a waiting list for people wanting to
live on the estate. KMC
intend to apply Home Zone solutions to other housing estates - finance
permitting.
