Morice
Town is about 4 miles from Plymouth City Centre and lies adjacent to
Devonport Naval Docks. The
housing is a mixture of post-war housing mostly flats and terraced. The
area had serious crime, vandalism and pollution problems. There is a primary school at the centre of the area and
another just outside. There
are several small businesses in the vicinity. There
are many green spaces around the area but these are on steep slopes and
fouling by dogs reduce the suitability for playgrounds. There is no
traffic calming in place and the accident rate is high. Although there are
many problems in the area most residents like where they live.

Impacts
About
three-quarters of the adult residents thought that the appearance of the
Home Zone area was an improvement and almost a quarter spent more time
outside participating in community activities.
There has been a general reduction in the speed of traffic and the
volume of traffic. There has been a 40% reduction in traffic volume across the
nine streets. This has allowed children to use the streets as a play area.
There was little change in the amount of daily walking but there
was a general increase in walking to the shops, to neighbouring properties
or for leisure. Crime
statistics show a drop in recorded crime from 142 crimes (2002-3) to 9
crimes (2003-4)
