Surrey County Council

Nutley Lane is the original route to the North and South Downs from Reigate.  The housing is Victorian style terraced and semi-detached and the road is a one-way single lane highway.  There are shops and a public house on the lane, which is situated close to Reigate Rail Station and next to the London Road bus terminus.  It is a busy route for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists accessing local schools, parks and the city centre.

Scheme Objectives

Create a Home Zone within a very tight street scene, which is in a conservation area.

Impacts

The screening to Nutley Court, new tree planting and soft landscaping has enhanced the environment.  A greater feeling of security due to the street lighting as well as improved pedestrian facilities have been appreciated by residents.  Removal of uncontrolled parking particularly associated with the local garage has helped to boost the sense of equality between traffic and pedestrians.  There has been a reduction in the volume of traffic due to features which create pinch points and speed reducing features that discourage some rat-running through the lane.
