Background
Oldham’s
Estate, Astley Bridge is predominantly a council housing estate. As
the estate is fairly affluent it has not attracted funds through any
regeneration process, so now is one of the most deprived estates in the
district. The roads of the estate are very narrow and on road
parking is very dense.
Scheme Objectives
 | To encourage a partnership with residents to
work together to make the estate a safe, attractive environment.
|
 | To provide a safe
place for all residents.
|
 | To reduce traffic
speeds and so road traffic incidents.
|
 | Restore safety and
peace in the neighbourhood and aid in community development.
|
Impacts
A
project was developed to deliver a range of activities for young children
across the estate and this provision continues to date.
Health visitors utilised some of the Home Zone consultation events
to build relationships with local residents and focus on healthy living
issues, particularly related to families with young children. These links
have been maintained and there is involvement from Health in several
projects on the estate including the development of an Urban Care Centre.
Specifically in the Home Zone area, the work has complemented other
capital works to meet the Decent Homes Standard. Work has been ongoing to
improve the properties internally and externally. There
is an increased sense of ownership by residents and a more sustainable
community - as demonstrated by reduction in population turnover in that
area. There is also an
increased sense of pride in the area and even better community spirit
building on the wider community engagement programme.
