Lancashire County Council

The housing in Poulton is in a grid pattern and comprises 2,3 and 4 storey Victorian terraces.  There is a problem with the volume of traffic using the area.

Scheme Objectives

To reduce or remove traffic with no immediate access requirement.
To restrict parking to residents and local community activities.
To enhance the local environment through high quality street furniture and materials.
To create open spaces linked to the street.
To widen, improve and gate Back Green Street.

Impacts

Whilst still in the early days of redevelopment, it would appear that the primary objectives of removing unnecessary traffic and parking have been successful, together with a dramatic improvement in the street scene. 93% of Poulton’s streets now achieve EPA A or B cleanliness standard.   The level of crime in Poulton has reduced by 22% since 2002. A recent survey found that 90% of residents wished to remain in the area.

Progress - March 2005

All works now complete.  Opening ceremony held in December 2005 with some very good/positive local press coverage.  Further funding has now been identified for improving the central square (Fishermans Square/College Square).  Also funding has been allocated to refurbish three storey terraces overlooking square, with work already started.
