Background
Rookery
Gardens Estate turned into a cul-de-sac following a road closure in 1975
to prevent rat running through the estate. There are no official cycle paths through the area and no
communal green space or play areas.
Scheme Objectives
 | To improve road safety using traffic calming
measures and road closure in the zone area.
|
 | To discourage through traffic.
|
 | To create a village type estate by converting
garage space into a green.
|
 | To reduce vandalism and car crime
|
 | To make the area safer for residents.
|
 | To allow access to the zone via two separate
entry/exit points.
|
 | To improve the quality of life by making streets places for people,
not just for traffic.
|
Impacts
Traffic
flows and speeds have been reduced. Young
children are regularly using the garden area with parent’s supervision
and there is a feeling of increased safety. Incidents of vandalism have
dropped, possibly due to combination of activity, improved lighting and
CCTV. There has been an
increased confidence in investing in the area with Broomleigh Housing
Association currently building 17 new houses on the estate.
