Southville lies in close
proximity to the City Centre. The
majority of housing is privately owned and the remainder privately rented.
There is a school nearby
which generates a lot of pedestrian activity. The
residents concerns are for the safety of the children.

There
has been a marked increase in pedestrian and cycle activity particularly
in the Milford St and Stackpool Road cul-de-sac.
Generally the environment has improved significantly with more
opportunity for social activity and a more attractive street scene through
aesthetic improvements. This
will serve to reduce local car activity and improve air quality. Care
of the plants has been another noted feature as residents tend and
introduce their own plants to the established planters and beds.

Progress
- March 2005
The Stackpool Road cul de sac Home Zone is now
complete save for the delivery and soiling up of the bespoke planting
vessels/ trees and the erection of the wooden bollards. This will take
place on the 10/02/05 with a planting day for residents to take part in on
the 1202/05. A final name for the Home Zone is also under debate. The
Focal Point Home Zone also on Stackpool Road is in a similar position with
all civils works complete and a similar planting event will be organised
to stock the ground level planting areas. Home Zone signs and a final name
are similarly under debate. The Milford Street Home Zone (a much larger
scheme) in around 70% complete and is likely to be wholly complete by
early March 2005 although sub standard service utility run depths have
caused some problems. The Howard Road Home Zone has been significantly
reduced and is still at detailed design stage. It is currently anticipated
that this will start on site during early March 2005. It
is anticipated that all works will be complete by April 2005. In the
meantime, a draft tender brief is being prepared
for a post implementation evaluation of the whole scheme and it is
hoped that this will provide valuable lessons learned from this project.
