Background
Sutherland
Square, located in the Newington Ward, is a mixture of Victorian terraced
and purpose built flats which are mainly owner occupied or rented from a
private landlord. Although
the area is within the West Walworth 20mph Zone, there is no traffic
calming. The
residents had concerns about traffic speed.
Scheme Objectives
 | To reduce vehicle speeds below 20mph and to
give informal priority to pedestrians and cyclists
|
 | To maintain existing levels of parking for
residents
|
 | To make the street feel safer.
|
 | To bring local people together in order to
improve their environment.
|
 | To build a high quality Home Zone (with good
design and materials, Sutherland Square being a conservation area)
|
 | To provide safer areas to play in the street.
|
Impacts
A
number of aims were set for the Home Zone and many of these were achieved.
The quality of the street has
been improved, traffic speeds have reduced, parking levels were maintained
and the streets feel safer. Although
pedestrians feel a sense of priority at limited locations only, it is
considered that a robust environment has been created. One
of the objectives, to provide safe play in the streets, could not be
achieved.
