Background
The
Talbot and Brunswick Area is situated about 1mile from Blackpool seafront,
and in easy walking distance of the town centre and railway station. It
is a mixed area of residential and industrial land uses. The housing is mostly terraced style with small front gardens
and yards leading into alleyways. The
area is run down, has very poor lighting and the alleys are a haven for
crime.
Scheme Objectives
 | To give added value
by protecting and sustaining the community, helping to change the area
into a more livable and safer environment.
|
 | To upgrade street
lighting to help reduce crime.
|
 | To encourage the community to invest in
the appearance of their homes and develop more of a community spirit.
|
Impacts
The
alley gates in the Home Zone make back alleys a safer environment in which
children can play. Children
are playing on the streets and this has become an issue with some
residents. The whole area
looks more attractive and this has impacts on health and a feeling of
wellbeing. The new lighting
system has allowed residents to feel safer. The number of burglaries have
reduced. It has been noted
that property owners are taking pride in the area and are carrying out
external refurbishment of their properties. Housing
prices have increased in the Home Zone more than in other areas and is a
marketing feature used by Estate Agents.
