East Sussex County Council

Background

The Town Farm Estate is in the Hailsham East Ward of the town.  The housing is dense and mixed, with most being owned by council and housing associations.  The estate has plenty of parking spaces, with the majority of vehicles using designated parking areas.  The residents of the area are concerned about there being a lack of open space.

Scheme Objectives

Give priority to pedestrians and reduce the dominance of the car.
Create a safer area and enhance the local environment.

Impacts

The Home Zone project helped to pull together various regeneration projects in the area.  The regeneration initiatives over the past six years have cumulatively helped to increase house prices which had previously lagged behind the rapid increases in the south east.  There has been an increasing demand for properties on this estate.  There has been a reduction in traffic speed and this together with the shared surface and plaza areas have made the estate a safer and more pleasant place to live.  Surveillance has been improved and the creation of secure parking areas has deterred car crime.

Progress - March 2005

Works on site are substantially complete.  A final surface dressing is outstanding which is weather dependent.
