Background
Tyne Park, on the south bank of
the River Tyne, was the site of the National Garden Festival in 1990. Once occupied by the Redheugh Gas Works, Gateshead Council
carried out extensive reclamation work, however the site has been vacant
since the festival.
Scheme Objectives
 | To
create a community orientated environment.
|
 | To
minimise the impact of vehicle use.
|
 | To
create play areas. |
Impacts
The site is still under
construction so it is too early to report conclusively on the Home Zones
impacts. The creation of the
Home Zone has brought forward the Council’s own programme of works on
improving facilities for cyclists in the area.
The Home Zone play features have attracted children from the
surrounding area. Some anti-social behaviour from local non-resident
children has been reported and the area is now patrolled by neighbourhood
wardens.
