Background
The
Victoria Lane Estate, located in Whitefield is primarily a council housing
estate. The estate lies close to the Bury-Manchester Metrolink line
which forms the westerly boundary. There is a recreational area,
Victoria Park, through which a well used pedestrian route linking the
housing estate with the public transport facilities and shops on New Bury
Road (A56) passes. The roads on the estate are generally narrow with
a number of small roundabouts within the area.
Scheme Objectives
 | Change the way the
streets are used
|
 | Assist in the
regeneration of the area
|
 | Improve road safety,
the local environment and manage traffic on the estate better.
|
Impacts
By
improving road safety and reducing through traffic there has been a
decrease in the accident rate and parents feel more confident to allow
their children to play in the open spaces and the ‘ball zone play
area’. By improving the
overall environment and safety of the area through street lighting and
visual improvements, pedestrian activity through the estate has increased.
Crime has been reduced by gating off the back alleys and tree
pruning to allow greater conspicuity. Use
of quality materials and providing designated parking areas has added to
the regeneration of the area.

Progress
- March 2005
The
Contractor has completed the majority of the works and has now left site.
However there has been a major delay on the leadtime for the
bollards we have ordered and we are still waiting for these to be
introduced.
