Rochdale Metropolitan Council

Wardleworth is an area of Rochdale with some of the Borough’s poorest housing.  The housing is mainly terraced with no gardens or parking space, and most are owner occupied.  There has now been a new housing development following the designation of the area as a Renewal Area.  There are local shops and the area is within walking distance to the town centre.

Scheme Objectives

Reduced accident rates particularly amongst children and older people.
To reduce dominance of the car in people’s lives.
To engage the community in changing their environment. to create and contribute to a more sustainable environment.
To encourage more productive use of the open space.
To provide safe areas for community use.
To increase community confidence.
To meet identified local needs.
To increase community’s sense of health and wellbeing.
To improve management of existing traffic flows.
To complement and add value to current and planned initiatives.
To legitimise streets as public open space.

Impacts

South Street no longer seems to feel as dominated by the car.  Most drivers have reduced their speed and residents appear to be pleased with the upgraded environment. It has also been noticed that more children are playing on bikes outside.  The overall environment has been improved by including trees, art and purpose designed public space.  The area looks more residential.  The area is generally safer to play in.  The improved street lighting has reduced the perceived fear of crime and allowed residents to feel safer.
