Background
The Woodside Estate was
developed in the 1960/70’s for public sector housing with its layout and
structure based on the Radburn principles. The
concerns of the residents relate to the amount of traffic, traffic speed
and number of accidents on the estate. Traffic
calming was introduced prior to local government reorganisation and linked
with the Safer Routes to School project.
Scheme Objectives
 | To
empower local residents with pride in their environment.
|
 | To
reduce traffic speeds. |
 | To
reduce crime. |
 | Improve
safety. |
 | To
promote walking, cycling and public transport use. |
Impacts
Residents have expressed the
view that even though work is not completed, there is an improvement in
the way that the estate feels as they enter Westbourne Avenue.
The Home Zone Challenge funding proved to be a catalyst in the
regeneration of the Woodside Estate. The funding has acted as pump
priming, encouraging other funding sources to open up. Consequently the
whole estate will now be regenerated and redeveloped along Home Zone
principles.

Progress
- March 2005
There are 11 defined programme areas in West 1
including cul-de-sacs and main avenues, work is in progress in 5 of these
areas with the aim of completing at least one full area by the end of the
extended funding period. A
package of promotional measures are being developed to support the
construction work and to encourage safe use of the home zone. These
measures will be ongoing as home zones are developed across the Woodside
estate. Home zone signs are already on display at the entrances to the
cul-de-sacs.
