Background

The Wonford area lies within a large post war residential estate.  The housing is mostly semi-detached and situated in a symmetrical grid road layout with a large roundabout at the southern end.  There are three schools located in the area, local shops and access to a safe route to Exeter city centre which is only one mile away.  Traffic calming was introduced in the late 1980’s to reduce the traffic along Burnhouse Lane, which has been very successful.

Scheme Objectives

To reduce crime
To create community space
To reduce traffic speed

Impacts

The new scheme has lifted the whole area on the strengths of the existing good building stock and through visual improvements.  The new trees have had a very positive impact.  The children are now using the area as a large playground as the traffic has considerably reduced speeds so it is much safer for them to do so.  The new design and home zone process seems to have gone a long way to raising moral and community spirit.  Little vandalism has been reported to date and also anti-social behaviour levels have reduced.

Progress - March 2005

During the last months of construction work has progressed extremely well, with no major problems encountered.  Possible problems with theft or damage have not so far occurred.  The Contractor has worked hard through out the period and now the build is now on target to finish on date apart from the final bound gravel finish.  This has been delayed because of a proposed change of sub-contractor with a change of resin, but hopefully will be sorted very shortly.  The local community has been very accommodating during the build.  We have managed to install approximately 34 hardstandings during the build so far with the last couple to be concreted this week.
